You found your parents' old camcorder tapes in a box, but you have no idea what format they are or how to play them. Understanding camcorder tape formats is the first step to watching and preserving those old home videos.
The Major Camcorder Formats
VHS-C (VHS Compact)
VHS-C was one of the most popular camcorder formats of the late 1980s and 1990s. These tapes look like miniature VHS cassettes—because that's exactly what they are. They measure roughly 3.6" × 2.2" × 0.9" and use the same tape width as standard VHS.
How to Play VHS-C Tapes: VHS-C tapes play in any standard VCR using an adapter cassette. The adapter is a full-size VHS shell that holds the VHS-C tape. Adapters are still available online for $10-25. Some are motorized (require a battery), while others are manual.
Hi8 and Video8
Sony's 8mm tape formats were popular throughout the 1990s. These tapes are significantly smaller than VHS-C and use completely different technology. They measure about 3.7" × 2.5" × 0.6".
How to Play 8mm/Hi8 Tapes: These tapes require 8mm-compatible playback equipment. They will NOT play in a VHS VCR—no adapter exists. Your options: find a working 8mm camcorder, get a dedicated player deck (now rare), or use a professional transfer service.
Digital8
Sony's Digital8 format used the same physical cassettes as Hi8 but recorded digital video. Digital8 camcorders can often play analog Hi8/Video8 tapes too, making them valuable for transfers.
MiniDV
MiniDV was the dominant digital camcorder format from the late 1990s through the 2000s. These tiny tapes (about 2.6" × 1.9" × 0.5") hold high-quality digital video and typically have FireWire output for direct digital transfer.
