Good to Know

The DR430 is a DVD recorder, not a VCR, and it has no TV tuner. To copy VHS tapes, you connect a VCR to its input jacks. To record TV shows, connect a cable or satellite box to its input.

Step 1: Gather What You Need

  • The recorder
  • The SE-R0265 remote with two fresh AA batteries
  • An HDMI cable

If you bought your recorder from TEKlinq, all of this is already in the box. Don't plug the recorder into the wall yet.

Step 2: Connect to Your TV

  1. On the back of the recorder, plug the HDMI cable into HDMI OUT.
  2. Plug the other end into an HDMI port on your TV, and note its number, like HDMI 1.

No HDMI port on your TV? Use a red, white and yellow cable from VIDEO OUT and AUDIO OUT on the recorder to the matching colors on your TV.

Step 3: Power On and Choose the Input

  1. Plug in the power cord and turn on your TV.
  2. Press ON/STANDBY on the remote or the front of the recorder.
  3. On your TV remote, press Input or Source and pick the input you used.

Step 4: First-Time Setup

  1. The Initial Setting screen appears. Use the up and down arrows to pick your language and press ENTER.
  2. Press ENTER again to set the clock, use the arrows to set the date and time, and press ENTER. This puts the right date on your recordings.
  3. For a sharper picture over HDMI, press the HDMI button on the remote. Each press steps the resolution up: 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p.

Step 5: Play a Disc

  1. Press OPEN/CLOSE and set the disc in the tray, label side up.
  2. Press OPEN/CLOSE again, then PLAY. PAUSE and STOP work as you'd expect.
  3. SETUP opens the main menu: the arrows and ENTER move around, and RETURN goes back.

Step 6: Connect a VCR or Camcorder

Run a red, white and yellow cable from your VCR's VIDEO OUT and AUDIO OUT to the recorder's input jacks: the front jacks marked L2, or the rear VIDEO IN / AUDIO IN jacks marked L1. A camcorder connects the same way.

Step 7: Record a Tape to DVD

  1. Put a blank DVD-R in the tray. A brand-new rewritable disc formats itself automatically.
  2. Press INPUT SELECT until you see the input you used, L1 or L2.
  3. Press REC MODE to choose the quality. SP fits two hours and looks great (XP 1 hr, LP 4 hr, EP 6 hr, SLP 8 hr).
  4. Start the tape playing on your VCR, then press REC on the recorder.
  5. When the tape is done, press STOP.

Step 8: Finalize the Disc

To play your disc in other DVD players, finalize it: press SETUP, choose DVD Menu, then Finalize, and select Yes. It can take a few minutes up to an hour, so don't unplug the recorder until it's done.

Troubleshooting

  • No picture: check that your TV is on the right input.
  • HDMI picture flickers or goes black: press the HDMI button until the picture is steady.
  • A tape won't record: most store-bought movies are copy-protected and can't be copied.
  • Disc won't play in another player: make sure you finalized it.
